PETER WEGNER: ABSENCE OF FIELD
March 13th - May 15th, 2010
Reception for the Artist: Saturday, March 13th, 6 - 8 PM
William Griffin Gallery is pleased to announce ABSENCE OF FIELD, its tenth exhibition by artist Peter Wegner. In this new series of paintings, the unifying element is physical absence, starkly rendered by the forms that remain. It represents a radical development in Wegner's practice as well as an evolutionary leap in the current understanding of abstraction.
Wegner’s increasingly idiosyncratic lattices are no longer assembled, but rather carved out of a pre-existing plane. The resulting works push abstraction toward its endpoint. According to Wegner, these new paintings are “notable for what they lack: a unified field of color, a unified plane, a unified theory to explain it all away. The object has been emptied out. It’s the art of what isn’t there.” |
