GRIFFIN is pleased to announce our summer group exhibition, which includes painting and sculpture by Enrique Martinez Celaya, an installation by Greg Colson, and photographs by Liza Ryan.
Robert Irwin’s Column from 1967 is presented in the West Gallery. As a pioneer of the Light and Space movement in the late 60s, Irwin used new materials, including plastics and light, to create works of art that challenged perception. Irwin used a clear acrylic in the column to create an object that is almost invisible – it literally blends into its environment. It is only as one moves around and looks through the column that it becomes apparent. In addition to creating a prismatic effect, the chevron shape also distorts the viewer’s perception of the surrounding space. Irwin’s series of columns were the last objects that he created before focusing solely on installations. Recent projects include the design of the Getty Gardens in Los Angeles and the design of the new DIA: Beacon in New York.
